Why Do You Write?

I was asked that question twice in the past five days. A good question, since I am not a writer by education nor trade. An excellent question, since I write novels and screenplays, in English and in French.

To be honest, I had to pause and think about it. Was it a life-long dream to become a writer? No. An urge, a passion? Not exactly. The desire to be famous? I wish. A way to pay my bills? Certainly not! (yet)

My first novel, “The Polar Bear and the Palm Tree”, is a tribute to the wonderful friends I made while living in Riyadh. A tribute to friendship beyond age and borders, a semi biographic tale of adventures and travels from the desert kingdom to the icy shores of the Arctic.

My second novel, “Bigoudis a New York City” is a light, funny tale of life in New York City, where I have lived for the past two years. Two lonely characters, unlikely to meet, bump into each other because of plumbing issues. They embark on adventures from the Upper East Side to Broadway (might sound less exotic than Saudi Arabia and Norway, but trust me, there might be lurking dangers and unexpected surprises at every corner!)

I am currently working on a screenplay, in English, and on three projects, two in English, one in French. I will pursue self-publishing but hope to be published one day.

So, I guess the answer to the question “Why do you write” is I gave it a try, loved it and as a dear friend told me, “it would be a shame not to explore that well of creativity.” Exploring I am, and hope you will join me on that fun journey! And why not tell your own story?

To answer the question “why do you write Evelyne?”, as I’ve been lucky to know you, although I have only scratched the surface of “you”, I think you should ask :” why shouldn’t I write?” Look at your life, your travels, your experience and all that you have done and achieved, doesn’t it make sense that you write? Tell us, friends and readers about the many tales and stories? Share with us some bits and pieces of your life, talk about your dreams, expectations, experiences. That’s why you write, for you and for us too… and thanks for doing it.

  3. I applaud your sense of adventure in exploring all the talents you may or may not possess. You obviously “hit a home run” in dipping into the writing pool! Looking forward to reading and seeing your future creations.
