Why a daily routine is so important

I never thought I’d say that, but I do sun salutations (Surya namaskar) every morning…and I enjoy it. There, I said it. But that was not always the case. I lived and traveled around Asia for years and joined my first yoga class in South Korea. I was not convinced and soon dropped out. I tried again in Hong Kong (it was a bit better but then my passion was kickboxing and spinning). Then came India, Bali, Saudi Arabia where I moved to and New York, where I live now.

I was (a bit) younger then, less patient and wanted to move outwards instead of inwards. Every yoga class started with sun salutations and they always seemed tediously boring to me (and a few too many).

Fast forward, I am now (a bit) older, with creaky joints and a doctor who told me to “take it easy” after a knee injury. So, I gave sun salutations another chance. And although my posture is less than perfect, I have already noticed a few benefits of this yoga exercise:

  • I feel energized due to better blood circulation
  • I feel stronger and more flexible (my joints still creak but less loudly!)
  • I feel more grounded, aware and in tune with my body and mind

After I’m done, I can start the rest of my day with a healthy breakfast, a chat with my husband and the daily news. And then? I write. I don’t know if sun salutations help me improve my writing, but they definitely improve my clarity of mind and my creative energy.

I’d love to hear about you, what is your daily morning routine?

Namaste,

Evelyne
